One step closer to the new personal data protection regulation

The final phase in the adoption of the personal data protection regulation has now commenced. On 15 July 2015, the Council of the European Union announced its proposed amendments to the European Commission’s draft personal data protection regulation, which was tabled in January 2012.

The three legislative bodies of the EU, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union will clear the final hurdles in the autumn. This among other things concerns the appointment of a data protection officer, the terms of One Stop Shops and the size of fines.

The bodies will commence negotiations on 24 June 2015 at which time the agenda for the negotiations of the autumn will be determined.

The second negotiation meeting has been planned for 14 July 2015 and here, the negotiations about the actual content will begin.

In the period from September to December, the bodies will finalise the negotiations about the remaining content of the regulation.

Consequently, it is realistic to live up to the objective of final adoption of the regulation before the end of 2015.

The regulation will take effect two years after its adoption.
