Large fine for oil leak in the USA

Failure to report an oil leak has cost a German shipping company USD 1.25m. The fine reflects the stricter approach adopted by the USA when it comes to oil leaks from ships.

A German-owned panamax container ship was damaged while transiting through the Panama Canal in 2011 and 2012.

Last year, when the ship called at Long Beach, California, the ship discharged a small amount of oil into the ocean – but failed to report this to the American port authorities.

Consequently, the shipping company was fined USD 1.25m.

Over the past years, the USA has adopted a stricter approach to oil leaks from ships, especially in situations where the shipping companies fail to report leaks to the authorities.
